Why Did You Become an Attorney? – Matt Feller
Video Description
I went to work for a company called Richards Kane and Allen. We had a case, it was the Mark Anthony OTT case. And Mark Anthony Ott was an individual that was seen over at his ex-wife’s house. And she’s there with her new lover. He breaks in and stabs the lover 52 times. In the scuffle, he lost his can of kerosene. So he goes out into his old garage, gets a can of gas, comes back in, douses the house with fuel, lights it, ignites it, and leaves.
So we represented Mark, and unbeknownst to Mark, when he lit the house, the lover’s 6-year-old little girl was asleep upstairs. The fire burned so hot that there was a silhouette that was outlined of her body in the bed where she burned and died. Sitting in a room with a guy like Mark Anthony out, who had no sympathy, no remorse didn’t give an elocution at trial on, “I’m sorry,” and none of that. That sparked my interest in wanting to put people like Mark, even though we represented him, away. Prosecution’s got a job to do and they need to do it with guys like this. So, that’s probably where I really said, “You know what, I’m gonna go to law school.” I had the curiosity. This is what lawyers do. And then, that case kind of is what triggered me to say, I’m gonna sit the LSAT, do pre-law, and go law school.
